Sénia

A medium-grain Spanish japonica bred by the rice department of IVIA at Sueca (Valencia). By the 1990s it was Spain's typical rice, having replaced Bahía thanks to better lodging resistance; it is one of the varieties of the Arroz de Valencia PDO.

A pale polished rice grain, illustrated for Sénia.

Profile

A 1997 review by an IVIA rice researcher names Sénia as the leading variety in both Valencia and the Ebro delta, medium-grained and bred by IVIA's rice department at Sueca, and calls it "the typical Spanish variety", having superseded Bahía mainly for its better lodging resistance. The Arroz de Valencia PDO specification gives Sénia an average raw-grain length of 5.6 mm, a length-to-width ratio of 1.8 (width here derived as 5.6 ÷ 1.8 ≈ 3.1 mm), 99% pearled grains and 16.3% amylose.
