Khao Kai Noi

A small, round-grained glutinous rice of the northern Lao highlands (Houaphan and Xieng Khouang), the first product registered as a geographical indication in Laos.

A pale polished rice grain, illustrated for Khao Kai Noi.
Khao Kai Noi — editorial grain study, polished, not to scale. Appearance alone does not establish variety or protected origin.

Little chick

Khao Kai Noi means "little chick" rice: the grains are small and round, like the broken rice fed to chicks. It grows in the cool, mountainous north of Laos, and in 2020 the GI associations of Xieng Khouang and Houaphan had 336 farmer members. Dimensions here are estimated from the short-grain class and the documented round shape.
