Hinohikari

ヒノヒカリ

The sun of western Japan

Hinohikari was bred at the Miyazaki Prefectural General Agricultural Experiment Station from a cross of Koganebare, a leading Aichi cultivar, as the seed parent and Koshihikari as the pollen parent. The name joins hi, the sun, standing for western Japan and Kyushu, with hikari, the shine of the freshly cooked rice.

Hyogo Prefecture describes it as a good-eating rice that resists lodging, grown mainly in Kyushu and also in Kinki, Chūgoku and Shikoku. In 2016 it covered 9.1 % of Japan's paddy area.
