Akitakomachi

あきたこまち

A short-grain cultivar from Koshihikari × Ou 292, bred at the Akita Prefectural Agricultural Experiment Station and released in 1984. It covers more than 70 % of Akita's rice area and was Japan's fourth most planted rice in 2016.

Akita's own rice

Akitakomachi came out of the Akita station's rice-breeding programme that ran from 1977 to 1992. Like Hitomebore, another Koshihikari child, it inherited from Koshihikari both the sticky cooked texture and strong cold tolerance at the booting stage.

It has stayed the most planted cultivar in Akita for some thirty years and now covers more than 70 % of the prefecture's rice area; nationally it has held a place between second and fourth. In 2016 it covered 7.0 % of Japan's paddy area.
