Hitomebore

ひとめぼれ

A Japanese short-grain cultivar bred from Koshihikari × Hatsuboshi at the Miyagi Prefectural Furukawa Agricultural Experiment Station and released in 1991. In 2016 it was Japan's second most planted rice, on 9.6 % of the paddy area.

A Koshihikari child built for the cold north

Hitomebore was bred at the Furukawa Agricultural Experiment Station in Miyagi, the station that also produced Sasanishiki. Its seed parent is Koshihikari, and genome studies put the share of Koshihikari's genome it carries at about 80.8 %.

From Koshihikari it took both eating quality — the sticky texture of the cooked grain — and strong cold tolerance at the booting stage, which has helped it resist cold-weather damage in northern Japan. In 2016 it covered 9.6 % of Japan's paddy area, second only to Koshihikari.
