Twenty years in Soc Trang

Ho Quang Cua returned to Soc Trang province around 1980 and began collecting and testing aromatic rice strains. His team introduced ST3 to farmers in 2001. ST25 came from a cross of ST3 with the variety Tien Vua, after about 20 years of work, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development recognised it as a national variety in 2019.

The variety does best in the coastal, brackish land of the Mekong Delta, including rice–shrimp rotation fields. Viet Nam News puts its area at about 200,000 ha nationwide in 2025.
