A proprietary medium-grain japonica developed for Koda Farms in California's San Joaquin Valley by the breeder Hughes Williams and introduced in 1962 as the first premium medium-grain rice on the US market. It became a favourite of Japanese Americans.

A family rice

Koda Farms was founded by Keisaburo Koda, who came to California from Fukushima in 1908 and farmed rice in the San Joaquin Valley from the 1920s. After the family's wartime internment, his sons Edward and William rebuilt the farm. Wanting an improved, proprietary table rice, they hired the rice breeder Hughes Williams; after about a decade of selection on the farm the variety was named Kokuho Rose and introduced in 1962. Grain dimensions on this page are estimated from the medium-grain class.
