Rode Star

A late, red-skinned Dutch heritage potato from Geert Veenhuizen, introduced around 1908–1909. Grown on heavy clay it was floury and well flavoured, with fairly deep yellow flesh; on other soils it often stayed too firm.

Origin and character

The 1960 Rassenlijst, quoted by CGN, gives Rode Star's cross as Professor Wohltmann x Erica, made in 1903, with introduction in 1909, by Geert Veenhuizen. The WUR Potato Pedigree Database gives the same cross and the year 1908.

The list describes a late, red, durable eating potato. On heavy clay its quality was very good, nicely floury and well flavoured; on other soils it often stayed too firm. The tubers are round-oval with medium-deep eyes, fairly dark yellow on the plate with a good, firm structure, and the starch content is high. Many small tubers kept the yield of eating sizes moderate.
