WITA 8

A West African indica cultivar documented for irrigated and lowland production. The FAO regional catalogue lists long grain and 26.9% amylose for WITA 8.

Location: Niger

A registered line for lowland cultivation

The FAO catalogue identifies WITA 8 as an IITA/ADRAO line and lists releases in Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire. Niger’s national catalogue separately records its cultivar identity and irrigated/lowland use. Those country registrations are not a claim that the cultivar originated independently in each country, nor a description of its current planted area.

Long-grain classification, careful dimensions

The regional catalogue reports long grains and an amylose value of 26.9%. Its kernel measurements do not establish a polished-grain basis, so they have not been copied into the measured-milled display. The illustration uses an explicitly estimated long-grain size. The variety is distinct from WITA 9; the shared WITA series is not a single interchangeable rice.
