Taichung 194
臺中194號
A fragrant Taiwanese japonica cultivar released in 2009. Its breeders introduced basmati-type aroma into Taikeng 9 material while selecting for grain appearance and eating quality.
Aroma in a japonica background
The Taichung station crossed Taikeng 9 with basmati-type breeding material, then backcrossed a later-generation line to Taikeng 9. The resulting cultivar was released in 2009. It remains a japonica cultivar with documented basmati-type ancestry; it is not the protected South Asian basmati name. The official summary also records the grant of plant variety rights on 2 October 2015.
Fragrance and grain quality
The breeding report presents medium-class grains and low apparent amylose in its trials. Cooked-rice panels favoured its aroma, appearance and overall quality relative to Taikeng 9. The grain drawing uses a clearly labelled class-based estimate: the reported grain-shape ratio has not been mistaken for kernel width. The available official reports differ on the exact release date, so this entry gives the year only.
