Bred for quality

Samgwang is a mid-late japonica, heading about two days before Ilpum at Suwon. Its grains are short and round, slightly better in appearance than Ilpum, with similar amylose (18.3 %) and lower protein; 94.5 % of its milled rice comes out as whole grains. Brown-rice 1,000-grain weight is 22.2 g.

In regional trials it averaged 569 kg of milled rice per 10 a, 3 % above Ilpum, with stable yields across sites and years. It resists bacterial leaf blight and stripe virus but not planthoppers, and is recommended for the central plains and mid-altitude areas of the south.
