Kalojira

কালোজিরা

A black-husked, small-grained aromatic landrace of West Bengal with short, bold white kernels and low amylose.

A pale polished rice grain, illustrated for Kalojira.
Kalojira — editorial grain study, polished, not to scale. Appearance alone does not establish variety or protected origin.

Black husk, white kernel

In trials at Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Kalyani, Kalojira had black lemma and palea, short grains 4.9 mm long in the husk, and white, short, bold kernels 3.7 mm long and 2.1 mm wide; the paper does not say whether the kernels were milled, so the dimensions are flagged as not confirmed milled measurements. Amylose was 18.0 %, aroma medium-strong, and the crop matured late, at about 151 days.
