Saanen
A white dairy goat from the Saane valley in Switzerland and the most widespread dairy goat breed in the world. It is stocky and calm and adapts to all systems, including intensive ones. In France it arrived around 1910 and was imported in large numbers in the 1960s; about 350,000 Saanen goats were counted there in 2022.

The Saanen in France
Races de France says the first Saanen goats arrived in France in 1910, followed by mass imports in the 1960s. Since the 1970s the breed has been selected under a collective scheme for dairy traits run today by Capgènes. It is most common in the south-east, centre and west of France. In 2022, 114,600 Saanen does were milk-recorded out of about 350,000 in total.
