Alpine

France's most common dairy goat, with 55 % of milk-recorded does. Its cradle is Savoie and the coat is usually chamoisé (fawn to brown with black markings), though multicoloured strains exist. It is a strong, hardy milker that suits housing, pasture or mountain life.

France's leading dairy goat

Capgènes, the French goat selection organisation, names Savoie as the cradle of the breed and says it still keeps a notable herd there. The Alpine is now raised across France, especially in the middle Loire valley and its tributaries, the Saône and Rhône valleys and Poitou-Charentes. Races de France dates the herd book to the 1930s and collective dairy selection to the 1970s. In 2022 about 159,000 of some 450,000 Alpine does were milk-recorded.
