A name, not a single variety

Wuchang rice is a protected origin name rather than a cultivar. It was registered as a geographical indication certification mark in 2007 and placed on the first list of products under the China–EU agreement on geographical indications in 2020. China's national standard for it, first issued in 2003 and revised in 2008 and 2024, defines it by place and variety: Wuyou rice No. 4 and other japonica varieties grown under the conditions of Wuchang City.

CNIPA reports that Wuchang rice has ranked first among Chinese rice GI products by brand value for nine consecutive years.
