Sindongjin

신동진

A large-grained Korean japonica bred at the National Honam Agricultural Experiment Station (RDA) from Hwayeongbyeo × YR13604Acp22 and named in 1999. For some twenty years it has been the main rice of Jeonbuk.

The rice that changed Jeonbuk's reputation

After the Uruguay Round, Korean breeding turned from yield to quality, but the two were hard to combine. Sindongjin, crossed from 1992 and registered in 1999, managed both: in regional trials it yielded 596 kg per 10 a, 14 % more than Dongjin, while tasting better. Its grains are about 1.3 times larger than those of other varieties and its brown-rice 1,000-grain weight is heavy.

Jeonbuk produces about 17 % of South Korea's rice, much of it long sold on as raw material under other regions' names. Researchers at the provincial extension service credit Sindongjin with changing the image of Jeonbuk rice.
