Not one rice but many

Joha is a class rather than a single variety. A 2024 study of twenty Joha cultivars — Kon Joha lines, Keteki Joha, Kalijeera, Ronga Joha, Manimuni Joha, Kunkuni Joha, Jeera Joha, Harinarayan and others — found decorticated grains 4.1–7.0 mm long (mean 5.2 mm) and amylose from 15.2 % (Jeera Joha) to 24.4 % (Harinarayan). ICAR-NRRI treats Joha, like the Bhog rices of eastern India, as a short-grained aromatic group genetically distinct from Basmati. Milled dimensions here are estimated from the short-grain class.
