Ciherang

An Indonesian high-yielding indica variety released in 2000 that replaced IR64 as the country's most widely grown rice. It comes from a cross that brings IR64 back in repeatedly, and it has very similar grain quality to IR64 with better yields. In a 2022 Ministry of Agriculture tally it covered about 30 % of Indonesia's rice area.

Successor to a mega-variety

IR64, released in the Philippines in 1985, was grown on more than 40 % of Indonesia's rice area for about a decade. Ciherang, released in Indonesia in 2000, then replaced it. Its pedigree brings IR64 in twice, and Mackill and Khush describe it as morphologically and genetically similar to IR64, with very similar grain quality and improved yields. That closeness let breeders make a flood-tolerant version, Ciherang-Sub1 (released as Inpari 30), with only one backcross.

A 2022 Ministry of Agriculture presentation lists Ciherang first among the varieties planted in Indonesia, on about 3.33 million ha or 29.9 % of the area, with Inpari 30 Ciherang Sub 1 on a further 4.7 %.
