What Carolino means

The PGI is defined as the husked caryopsis of Oryza sativa L., subspecies japonica, of the variety Ariete 2nd generation, from parishes of Azambuja, Benavente, Salvaterra de Magos, Vila Franca de Xira and Coruche; the producer group is Orivárzea at Salvaterra de Magos. INIAV researchers explain that in Portuguese trade "carolino" is japonica long-grain rice of the extra category A with amylose under 22%, as opposed to "agulha", indica long B rice with amylose over 25%. The dimensions on this page are estimated, based on the Ariete variety's 6.3 × 2.6 mm in the Italian variety register.
