BRRI dhan29

ব্রি ধান২৯

A high-yielding Boro (dry-season, irrigated) rice from the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, approved in 1994. With BRRI dhan28 it has covered about half of Bangladesh's Boro area. It has medium-slender white grains, high amylose and a long, 160-day season. It was also the background for Bangladesh's Golden Rice.

A Boro workhorse

BRRI's own factsheet describes BRRI dhan29 as a Boro-season variety approved for commercial cultivation in 1994. The plant is about 95 cm tall with a strong stem that resists lodging, it takes about 160 days from sowing to harvest, and it yields 7.5 t/ha on average. Its grain is medium-slender and white. The factsheet adds that many farmers call it "the hybrid rice of Bangladesh" because of its yield.

Later work puts its potential at 7 to 8 t/ha under good management and its maturity at 141 to 174 days depending on the site. A 2021 paper gives its share as more than 26 % of the Boro area, and a 2024 review counts BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29 together at about half of it.
